Lu Jong Healing Yoga led by Dr Deniah Pachai

The Lu Jong practice is a series of body movements that developed more than 8000 years ago in Tibet. Lu Jong originates in the Buddhist Tantrayana and Bön traditions and it is based on Tibetan Medicine. Tibetan Medicine understands that diseases are the consequence of imbalanced elements and humors (the vital substances of the body). Through the combination of position, movement and breath, Lu Jong opens the channels in the body and mobilizes misdirected energy. In this way, the practice of Lu Jong helps to cultivate balance on the physical, mental and energetic levels.
On the physical level, the movements support the healing processes and also effectively combat disease. With regular practice we become more flexible, strong and improve our overall vitality. On a mental level, Lu Jong helps us overcome negative emotions like anger and craving in order to achieve emotional balance and increase our energy. Through the exercises of Lu Jong we can influence the mind in such a way that it becomes free and compassionate. Our well being, awareness of our body and inner sensitivity, as well as our power of concentration and clarity are strengthened.
On an energetic level, Lu Jong releases blockages and opens the subtle body channels. Reestablishing the proper flow of energy has profound consequences for the health of both body and mind. And when we open our channels, we open our hearts.
This form of Lu Jong originates in the lineage of Tulku Lobsang, who introduced the practice of Lu Jong to the West. Prior to this, he received many years of teachings from masters of different Tibetan Buddhist schools. In this way, he was able to collect these precious exercises and modify them to adapt to Western needs. The result is an extensive program of physical movements, which bring our bodies and minds into balance. The practice of Lu Jong is suitable for all ages and physical abilities. While the movements of Lu Jong are simple, they can surely change your life.

I am a GP who is passionate about health promotion and disease prevention. I believe we can help patients improve their health and wellbeing by combining Eastern and Western medical knowledge and practices in a responsible manner. I currently work on a sessional basis in Urgent Care Centres in West London and in a Private GP practice in central London. I am also a Western Medical Acupuncturist and Lu Jong teacher and teacher trainer.
I was drawn to Lu Jong as The Five Elements Movements of the practice consists of a simple 10-minute movement and breathing technique that is ideal for those who want to start or maintain a daily yoga or exercise practice. I was looking for a yoga practice to teach to patients as I was becoming increasingly alarmed at the levels of illness that people were presenting with that eventually result in people having to take several different medications. I love the beautiful simplicity of Lu Jong and soon discovered its tremendous physical and mental health benefits.

I was fortunate enough to visit one of these renowned centres of education in Tibet in 2018, called the Labrang Monastery. Monks learn these movements gradually from a young age, so they are less likely to injure themselves. People in the west are interested in the Tibetan Buddhist Tantrayana practices as they help to access the subtle body and the body's natural healing abilities. Lu Jong gives the Westerner access to these practices by preparing the body with gentle movements initially. I was drawn to them as they can be done for general health and well being without any interest in Buddhism or delving deeper into the more advanced Tsa Lung and Tummo practices to accelerate the path to enlightenment.
The postures in Lu Jong are simple and easy to learn and require just 10-40 minutes a day of time commitment, and once learned, there is no need to attend a regular class.
The practice can be done in the comfort of one's own home; the office, in a park, on the beach, or even in a hotel room. If done mindfully, the risk of injury is extremely low.
The Five Elements movements do not require any special equipment. For the rest of the practice, all you need is a yoga mat or blanket to sit on, maybe a pillow.
I have personally experienced the beneficial effects of Lu Jong in the last few years and I am truly grateful to Tulku Lobsang and Buddhism for the technology. I look forward to sharing this practice with you.
